I cannot find my cat inside my house

Hi all. This is almost embarrassing to post, but after I did some research I noticed this is semi-common.

I recently adopted a new cat and now I can’t find her. She was hiding under my bed whenever I went to sleep and the next morning she was gone.

I have looked everywhere. I have looked under my bed, under dressers and cabinets and bookcases, behind these items and behind the washer and dryer and stove, behind freezers and our gun safe, under and behind the couch. Everywhere. Legit everywhere!!!

I’m at a total loss for words on what to do. There’s no where for her to get into the walls or under the house (I have checked the dryer, behind the bathroom sink, etc.) I don’t have a basement and the attic is pulled down by a ladder that is never used.

I have set cat food of all sorts out for her and water as well but none of it has been touched. The fact she is hiding does not bother me, it’s the fact I don’t know if she got out or is stuck somewhere is what is bothering me the most. I only want her to be okay.

Any advice? I live with my mother and I don’t think she’d lie to me about letting her go. We’ve had bad weather nonstop so I don’t see her going far.

Update: I definitely just found her. I have no idea where she was but she came out of there and took off when I saw her. So she’s in the house!

Have you opened all your drawers? Sometimes they are accessible from under a dresser… If she’s still truly in the house, then she’ll come out when she’s hungry. Wishing the best!

Yes!! Dresser 100%. My late cat (she’s unfortunately gone now) would go “missing” almost daily. Turns out, she would slip behind my dresser and jump into the drawers and sleep with my clothes. She did this for years. I ended up just opening a drawer enough for her to slip into after a couple weeks. She loved the clothes.

Or behind a drawer if it’s not closed all the way.

My cat gets behind the drawer, then squeezes inside the drawer through the like 2 inch gap, and you get a surprise when you open the drawer and there she is. She’s fully liquid, I believe.

I had a cat who would do that as well if she couldn’t go in from the front.

Cats will find the most unusual places to hide. Leave some food out and treats out, and they’ll come out in their own time. Because they’re a new cat, it will take them time to adjust. I suggest opening every cupboard door and leaving it ajar just a little too. You never know.

Try to look under your bed(s) at the bottom of the box spring (if you have one) because usually the bottom is just a piece of fabric, I’ve had a bunch of cats that liked to hide in the box spring.

I just saw you said you found her. but maybe that’s where she was?

I was just going to say the same thing. Look INSIDE the box spring and couch.

One of my cats liked to play inside the box spring. They would also lay on their back and “run” around the box spring, like pulling themselves along by clawing the crap outta the box spring. While still having their back on the floor.

My cat got deep inside my couch and hid for an entire day. I had no idea where he was.

I lost my cat inside a couch once too, or maybe it’s more like he crawled inside couch and fell asleep  Scared the hell out of me until I finally found him.

Best practice is to keep a new cat in a single room for about a week when you first bring them home. This is the reason why.

If you can corral her into your room, do it. Food on one side of the room, cat box on the other side. Let her acclimate to the smells and sounds from within a controlled environment, and she’ll settle in more quickly.

I have her in a room. Any advice on what to do now?

make sure she has food, water, and litter in different corners of the room. they don’t like it when they’re too close together. do normal things around her so she gets used to you being there and being normal. maybe sit and do completely nothing and see if she will come over, talk nicely to her and make her feel comfy.

once she is calm and confident in this room, slowly introduce other areas of the house!

I had this happen once. I eventually realized that there was a window which had been partially open, and when I went to look at it, saw that the screen was torn. Found the cat hiding in a bush underneath that window. Hopefully not your case, but that was mine.

My cat semi popped off the lid to one of those clear plastic storage containers that fit in the closet and had been hiding in my dress clothes cozy as a clam when I finally found her. My other cat has a habit of getting in the cabinets and weaving herself amount the glassware. You could ask the shelter or previous foster which treats she likes and leave some in every room. It might tempt her to come out and eat some at night. Make sure to also place water bowls around (ie under the beds).

About 25 years ago, I moved into a new apartment. My cat was not happy at first so he traveled to an alternate dimension for a couple days to let me know how upset he was with the move. I moved into a small 1 bedroom. I knew for a fact that he did not get out the door. Plus the door only led to a landing, with another set of doors at the bottom. I searched the place up and down for 2 days. I knew he was there. There really were not a lot of places for him to hide. I pulled apart the closets several times. So about 2 days after the move, I was sitting on my bed reading a book and he just casually strolled out of one of the closets which luckily I had left open. I don’t know where he was but he definitely was not on the same plane of existence that I was. He was a big guy probably close to 18 pounds. I never did figure it out. LOL.

My 18 pound mystery has also come out of a closet casually after much worry on his mother’s part.

Try the couch. There used to be a gremlin cat at my mom’s house that lived in the couch and would only come out for food or a stroll in the neighborhood. I don’t know how because it had two malformed arms and had no eyes.
