I’m currently nervous about whether or not to neuter my dog. He’s already older, but the vet recommended doing it. Today, while I was petting him, I noticed a small bump on his testicles, and I’m scared it might be a tumor. So, I’m seriously considering neutering him, but I’m afraid.
Please neuter. I am a foster parent, we do NOT need more animals.
Definitely do it. You’ll reduce his chances of getting testicular cancer and make his quality of life higher.
I totally understand how you’re feeling buddy. Neutering can be a nerve-wracking decision. I had my own pets neutered, and I was just as anxious beforehand, especially about the anesthesia and recovery. But overall, the experience went smoothly, and it really brought peace of mind. They healed quickly, and I noticed they became calmer and more focused, which was a nice benefit. When I noticed a small bump on one of my labradors, the vet assured me that neutering could actually help lower certain health risks, like tumors, and it made me feel I was doing something proactive for their long-term health.
@Lin
That’s really reassuring to hear! Thanks for sharing your experience.
There are studies out there saying neutering can cause joint issues/pain later on BUT this only applies to larger dog breeds AND if you neuter them before they’re done growing. Since your dog is on the older side the only risk is the surgery itself, it will not cause extra joint pain or problems in the future.
@Sawyer
Thanks for the info! That definitely eases my mind a bit.
It was very easy. He didn’t lick the wound and healed up just fine. Just be aware that neutered males tend to gain weight easily afterwards. My dog is permanently on weight loss food with advice from the vet.
There’s almost no downsides to neutering a dog, the surgery is quick and fairly non-invasive. Your guy will need a day or two to relax to recover and then he’ll be back to normal.
Your vet is very educated and experienced and is really the voice to listen to here.
I got my 13-year-old dog neutered and he was fine If he’s a senior they should be doing blood work to check that he’s healthy enough.
Please neuter. Not only does it protect your pet from testicular cancer, it helps him be calm, less distractible, less likely to run off & get hit by a car…please neuter.
