I don’t know how this happened, but our house is infested with fleas. We’ve got 4 cats (3 kittens, about 6 months, and their 3-year-old mom), a 16-year-old Chi, a 9-year-old chi mix, and a bunny. I’ve been giving everyone flea baths, using flea collars, spraying furniture, and washing all the bedding weekly. I’m planning to flea bomb the house soon, but is there anything else I should be doing? I’ve heard about using diatomaceous earth outside, or even adding it to their diet, but I’m not sure. Any advice?
I dealt with fleas a while ago—getting rid of them in the house is tough! Washing your pets is great, but make sure you’re treating the whole house too. Vacuuming daily and washing everything in hot water helps. As for diatomaceous earth, I wouldn’t feed it to them, but sprinkling it outside and around the house could help with killing fleas.
@Galen
Thanks! Yeah, I wasn’t sure about feeding them diatomaceous earth either. I’ll stick to using it outside.
You’re doing most of the right stuff, but if it’s bad, you might want to look into prescription flea meds from the vet. They’re way more effective than over-the-counter stuff. And definitely treat your yard too. Fleas could be coming from outside.
@Haven
Agreed. Vet meds are the way to go if the infestation’s really bad. I made the switch and the fleas were gone fast.
I’ve heard of the diatomaceous earth thing, but be careful with it. It can be harmful if inhaled, even for pets. Stick to sprinkling it in areas where they don’t hang out too much, like outside or around furniture legs.
If you bomb the house, do it again 10-14 days later to get any fleas that hatch after the first treatment. I learned that the hard way! It’s also worth treating your yard at the same time so they don’t just come back.
@Kelly
Good tip! I didn’t even think about the yard. I’ll definitely do that.
