I just took in a fire bellied toad from my ex-boyfriend because his sister couldn’t care for it. I have quite a few questions, but I really don’t want to rehome him since I’m already in love! Right now, he’s in a cricket keeper since it’s the only thing I had that he couldn’t escape from. I’ve read that they are semi-aquatic, and I have an old fish tank that holds water. I’m wondering how to create a water-land partition since I’ve never done one before. What size cage do I need? The fish tank I have is 60x45x30 (LxHxW). Do I need to heat the water? I can if needed, but I’d prefer not to due to burn risks. Can he climb glass? Should I use mesh or glass for the lid, and which is better? Are they okay alone? What heating is needed, if any? Any advice would be amazing, and if you can’t answer all the questions, feel free to help with what you can. I really need all the info I can get for this little guy.

Sounds like a fun little project! For the water-land partition, you can use a plastic divider or create a sloped area with substrate.

Thanks! I’ll look into using a divider. What about the size of the tank?
Your tank size is great! Just make sure there’s enough land area for him to hop around. They don’t need super deep water.

Got it! I’ll make sure to give him enough land space.
You don’t need to heat the water, but if your room is cold, a small heater can help. Just be careful with positioning.

I appreciate that! I’ll keep an eye on the temperature.
They can climb, so a mesh lid is better! It’ll give him some ventilation too.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely go with a mesh lid.
Fire bellied toads can be alone, but they do enjoy company. Just make sure the tank isn’t too crowded if you get more.

That’s good to know! I’ll keep that in mind for the future.
