Feeling guilty after taking back my cat from someone who found him

This probably sounds kinda odd, but I thought I would share anyway.

My cat wandered off a few nights ago, and I tracked him to an apartment across the street using his tracker. I couldn’t find him at first, so I put up some flyers. The next day, my parents went looking for him and activated the tracker alarm near the same apartment. The person at the door denied having seen our cat. But later, we got a call from a neighbor who said our cat was right outside their door. We went to pick him up, and he was safe.

I’m pretty sure the first person my parents spoke to had found our cat, wanted to keep him, and put him outside after realizing we were looking. I feel a little guilty now because it seems like they didn’t have bad intentions and maybe bonded with him in those few days. They might have even bought stuff for him.

Has anyone been through something like this, or am I overthinking it?

That guy said he didn’t have the cat and then just put him out. That’s not right. Don’t feel bad.

And he turned off the tracker! Probably to pretend he didn’t have the cat all along. That’s messed up.

I’d be more worried that my cat almost got stolen than feeling sorry for the guy.

Someone stole our family dog when I was a kid. Nine years later, she got out during a storm and we found her at a shelter less than 30 minutes away. She still had the microchip in my mom’s name. As an adult now, I’d be furious if someone kept my pet.

In Oregon, stealing a pet is a felony.

I don’t know if it was an offense in Australia back then, but it is now. Sadly, I’ve heard of people who know where their stolen pet is, but the police won’t do anything.

Why would you feel guilty? It wasn’t his cat. He tried to steal yours.

I guess I’m just a little too trusting. I thought maybe he found the cat and just wanted to care for it. But clearly, that’s not how most people see it based on these comments.

If he was a good person, he’d have given the cat back right away, not put it out. Those aren’t the actions of someone who cares. There are plenty of cats needing homes. No need to steal one.

Exactly. He would’ve apologized and given it back if he cared. Instead, he threw the cat out when he thought he might get in trouble. That’s not love.

Any nice person would’ve put up ‘found’ signs before deciding to keep it.

Three days is not enough time to bond with a cat that might have an owner looking for it. He was probably waiting for a reward. Don’t feel bad.

@Sully
He stole your cat and lied to your face. If it’s really bothering you, send him a thank-you card with 10 bucks for ‘taking care of your cat.’ Just don’t include your return address, lol.

It’s not eating me up that much! I just felt like sharing my thoughts. I’m not going to send him anything, and this definitely won’t affect my day-to-day life.

The worst part is, your cat could’ve gotten lost again if not for the kind neighbor. That guy clearly didn’t care about your cat. You could’ve lost your fur baby because someone couldn’t be honest. You should be grateful that there was someone good next door to save your cat.
