Did i traumatize my kitten?

Hi,

I have a kitten that is nearly ten weeks old. We spent the last week playing “hide and seek” every day. I hide behind my bed, and she approaches me playfully; we repeat this a few times in succession.

I believed she wanted to play with me again (since she was looking at me like she had previously, so I ran up to her), but she hissed twice and hid under the bed. I’m worried I’ve caused her emotional distress :smiling_face_with_tear:. She is playful again and sleeps with me in bed, but I am not sure. This is my first cat, and I am a little concerned. I think it is a good indicator that she isn’t under the bed.

You might have done something that surprised her and made her a bit anxious. My cat has hissed at me and sometimes he runs away if I come at him too quickly. It is just an instinct cat’s have. If she is still hanging out with you she is fine

Lol, I believe she will be ok.
I’ve scared my kitty so much that she growled, but she quickly recovered and we resumed playing as she understood there was no real danger. It is a reflex. I see it as no different than springing out at a human, yelling BOO, and then screaming or hollering in surprise.

Haha, okay that sounds logical too :frowning: I felt so bad because it was not my intention.

Cats have such quick reflexes!

I grew up with dogs, so adjusting to cat behavior took some time. They react so much faster than most dogs.

Sometimes I would be left thinking, “What just happened?” The cat would already be across the room like, “How dare you pet me without warning! I thought I was under attack—even though I climbed into your lap for a nap just a minute ago. I did not consent to this!”

Then, after a few minutes of sulking, she’s back demanding to be on my lap again.

I have an indoor 11-year-old maincoon who is as jittery as a highly reactive dog.

You did not traumatize your kitten, to be honest.
