Avoid Buying Figo Pet Insurance

I just wanted to share my experience with Figo pet insurance, which I bought through Costco. It seemed reputable, especially with Costco’s endorsement.

I got Figo for my cat, thinking it would be quality insurance. However, a few months into the policy, my cat was diagnosed with stomatitis, an autoimmune disease that often requires tooth extractions. I submitted an estimate for preapproval, and Figo initially responded that the condition wouldn’t be considered pre-existing. But after the procedure, they denied my claim, saying any prior sign of gum disease made it pre-existing—even though they had these records during preapproval.

They told me that any mention of previous dental issues makes a pet completely ineligible for future dental illness coverage. When I asked what the point of preapproval was, their rep admitted, ‘I don’t know.’

I wanted to warn others so you don’t waste your money on a policy that may not cover you as expected.

You might want to file a complaint with your state’s Insurance Commissioner to see if there’s any recourse available.

Good idea, thanks.

I’ve worked with many pet insurance companies as a vet tech, and sadly, a lot of them operate like this. Sometimes, the only way to get them to pay is if your vet goes to bat for you. If you can explain the situation to your vet, they might be able to help.
