Anyone know organizations that help dogs get wheelchairs or low-cost ones?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for help finding a wheelchair for my dog, Hoppy, who was born without front legs. He’s a medium-sized dog, and I’d love for him to have the freedom to move around on his own. I’m on a tight budget, so I’m hoping to find a nonprofit organization or a place that offers free or low-cost wheelchairs for dogs. If anyone knows of resources, programs, or even DIY options that work well, I’d appreciate any advice or recommendations. Thank you so much for your help. Edit: Thanks everyone for you’re help. Joeys paws contacted me and got him a wheelchair.

You might want to check out Gunnar’s Wheels. It’s a nonprofit that provides free pet wheelchairs through a lifetime loaner program. They ask recipients to return the wheelchair when they are done with it, and it’s refurbished for another pet in need. You can contact them through their Facebook page. Also, Eddie’s Wheels offers different types of wheelchairs for dogs, including options for front, rear, and quad support.

@Fitz
That sounds like an excellent recommendation. Thanks for sharing.

If you can’t find a wheelchair, maybe try going to a local engineering school or find a senior’s center. Look for a retired engineer who might enjoy the project. They can be really creative. Just bring the dog with you, especially if he has soulful eyes.

@Blaine
That’s a unique idea. Do you think they’d actually be willing to help?

Absolutely, retired engineers often love working on interesting projects. You might be surprised at how enthusiastic they can be.

I saw on YouTube that DIY wheelchairs are mostly made from shopping trolleys and PVC pipes. The hardest part might be getting the balance right, but it seems doable.

That sounds interesting. Have you seen any specific videos that show how to do it?

I found some pet wheelchairs on Amazon for under $100. If that’s still too much, you could make an Amazon wishlist. People here on this forum can be quite generous.

That’s a good idea. I hadn’t thought about an Amazon wishlist. I might try that.

That’s awesome that Joeys paws reached out to help you. I’m into DIY stuff myself. My husband helps with wiring and 3D printing. We modify cars for kids who don’t have electric wheelchairs, so maybe dogs might be next on my list of projects.

@Wilder
That’s really cool. It sounds like you have some skills that could really help out. Have you thought about making one for your dog?

Dogs2go makes inexpensive wheelchairs that work great. You should check them out.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll look into Dogs2go for sure.

You should also check out Tyson’s Love and Hope on Wheels on Facebook. They might have resources or options available.

I’ll definitely give them a look. Thanks for the suggestion.

Maybe you could try a GoFundMe? Does anyone you know have a lot of followers who could help spread the word?

Unfortunately, no one I know has a large following. But it’s a good idea.

If you go to the Dog Wheelchair Life blog, they have lists of resources. They’ll even send you a free ebook that could be helpful.

That sounds really useful. I’ll check it out for sure. Thanks!

I see you’ve already found an organization, but adding High Rollers Club in case anyone else needs help finding one.
