Advice for constipated cat? When should I head back to the vet?

I took my 8-year-old cat to the vet last week because he was vomiting a large hairball and gagging. The vet said he’s constipated and has a lot of hair in his stomach. They gave him a shot for nausea, and he seemed fine for about 36 hours. Since then, he’s pooped a small amount mostly made up of hair. He’s thrown up 2-3 more small hairballs, but his appetite and energy seem normal. I’m feeding him wet food with extra water and got some hairball gel to help. However, he’s not pooping much, and I’m worried about whether I should take him back to the vet.

He needs to go back quickly for an enema. Don’t let the vet talk you out of it.

Cats hide their illness well. If you’re concerned, go to the vet now.

Did they give him any subcutaneous fluids or laxatives? If he’s only passing liquid, there could be formed stool stuck inside. If he’s not passing formed stool, he needs an enema.

I wouldn’t go back to that vet if I were you. When my cat had similar issues, the vet recommended an enema and high-dose laxatives.

I recommend using Miralax. My vet advised me to give 1/8 teaspoon twice a day for severe constipation. Keep him hydrated, as Miralax can draw water into the colon.
