I adopted a 10-year-old (estimated) Yorkie on Friday. At first, he was excited and ate treats but wouldn’t eat his dinner. Saturday, he skipped breakfast but ate treats and begged for our food during lunch and dinner. That night, he ate dinner but missed breakfast again yesterday. I went to work all day today, and when I checked my pet camera, he seemed to sleep the whole time, which I thought was normal. On my drive home, I noticed he looked like he was throwing up. When I got home, he had thrown up a bit but not a lot. I took him for a walk, and he acted normal, but when I put his food down, he ignored it. I even tried giving him some steak, but he wouldn’t eat that either. I’m worried—should I take him to the emergency vet tonight or wait to see if this is just anxiety from me not being home? Help!!
I would take him to the vet just to be safe. Small dogs can act fine but have serious issues. Has he been going to the bathroom alright? Maybe he’s constipated and feeling nauseous.
My brother’s dog was super picky too. He only ate if you played a little game with him. Dogs can be quirky like that!
Check out the 3/3/3 dog rule. He’s probably still adjusting. Make sure he’s drinking enough, and if he’s not eating in a day, contact your vet.
He’s likely stressed from the change. You don’t know what kind of food habits he had before. Just give it time!
Clindamycin can definitely cause nausea. You should get him some probiotics. Plain Greek yogurt or cottage cheese is good for their tummy!
He is on antibiotics for a tooth infection right now, so that could be affecting his appetite. I’ll see how he is in the morning and decide if we need to go to the vet.
Ask the vet to check his teeth; he might be in pain when eating. If so, try soaking his kibble until it’s soft.
