My ex moved in with their cats back in summer 2023, but they started cheating on me not long after. They haven’t been around for 5 months now, and I’ve been the one taking care of these cats—both physically and financially. Now, they’re saying they want the cats back, but it feels like they’re just using this to bargain because they know I want to keep them. Has anyone been through this? What can I do to make sure I get to keep them?
Have you been taking them to the vet? If your name is on the vet records or if they’re microchipped to you, that could help. Otherwise, I’d say block your ex and make sure you’ve changed the locks to avoid any surprises.

Are the cats chipped? If not, take them to the vet and get them microchipped in your name ASAP. That can help prove they’re under your care.
That’s a good idea. I’m planning to go to the vet soon to check if they’re chipped and maybe get it updated. Thanks for the tip.
Honestly, just block them. You don’t need that kind of drama if they’re not contributing anything to the cats’ well-being.
Look, it’s not the cats’ fault that your ex was a cheater. If your ex is usually good at caring for the cats, maybe think about letting them go back and adopting new ones from a shelter?

The issue is that my ex doesn’t have a stable place for the cats right now and is often away for work. I’ve been the one taking care of them consistently, and since the start of 2024, they’ve only seen the cats a handful of times. The cats even hiss and hide when my ex is around. I appreciate the thought, but I want to make sure I’m doing what’s best for the cats’ well-being.
